After a long and arduous wait, Guyana’s President Donald Ramotar today announced that General and Regional Elections will be held on May 11 – some four months from now. This would give the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) just about enough time to get its act together and prepare for elections.
The elections date confirms the private sectors worst fears, the cloud of business uncertainty and general tension that enshrouds Guyana at elections time will no doubt put a damper on the business activities – but does the general public care?? (That is left to be proven.)
The day that the Guyanese electorate goes to polls and vote to put a new government in office. Or they can always vote to have the incumbent, which has been serving since 1992, return to the office.
Now for the real question why only now a date? Is the pressure from the international community too much???
But then there is this other thing, if for some reason the President considers that GECOM will not be able to carry out its major function and pull off an election on May 11th, there is another odd constitutional power that allows the president to declare a State of Emergency.
Well well isn’t that something. Just so you know, this state of emergency can allow the President to rule by decree until his term expires or GECOM satisfies him, that the entity is ready for polls.
And one more thing, is CXC planned for May 11? Oh the perils of Guyana.
